Nahual - A spirit being or animal entity closely associated with humans.

Among Mesoamerican communities it is assumed that humans have an animal counterpart to whom their life force is linked; a protective spirit.  Nahual is also associated with the pre-Hispanic shamanistic practice of human transformation or shape-shifting.
